Maharashtra, AP lifters hold centrestage

KOZHIKODE Dec. 17. Lifters from Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh held centrestage on the second day of the inaugural National sub-junior weightlifting championship at the V.K. Krishna Menon indoor stadium here on Wednesday.

The two States won two gold medals each out of the seven that were decided on the penultimate day of the championship. Maharashtra's Asian sub-junior gold medal winners Sunil Naik (62kg) and Supriya Patil (48kg) lived up to their billing and easily won gold in their respective weight categories.

Sunil lifted a personal best of 230 kg while Supriya also attained a personal best lift of 145 kg. The day's most impressive performance came from Andhra's B. Prameela Velli who won the 63kg gold. Prameela coolly lifted 165kg, 20 kg more than her nearest rival. T. Kiran Mai completed a fine day for Andhra winning the 58kg gold.

Kerala's Chitra Chandramohan was beaten to the gold in the over 63kg category. Chitra and Premila Devi of Uttar Pradesh lifted an identical 132.5kg but the latter won on account of lesser body weight.

The results: boys: 62kg: 1. Aravind Yadav (Utt) (95kg snatch + 122.5kg clean and jerk = 217.5kg total); 2. M.D. Maran (TN) (90 + 117.5 = 207), 3. Subramanyam (AP) (92.5 + 115 = 207.5).

69kg: 1. Sunil Naik (Mah) (100 + 130 = 230), 2. Bharat Kamble (Mah) (85 + 115 = 205), 3. Rustam Kumar (Chd) (97.5 + 120 = 217.5).

Girls: 48kg: 1. Supriya Patil (Mah) (65 + 80 = 145), 2. S. Yamini (AP) (60 + 75 = 135), 3. Ibeyai Devi (Man) (55 + 75 = 130).

53kg: 1. H. Inanda Devi (Man) (65 + 82.5 = 147.5), 2. H. Sunibala Devi (Man) (62.5 + 80 = 142.5), 3. Sandhya Rani (AP) (60 + 80 = 140).

58kg: 1. T. Kiran Mai (AP) (6.5 + 85 = 152.5), 2. Jenitha Devi (UP) (65 + 80 = 145), 3. K.H. Nganthai Chanu (Man) (62.5 + 77.5 = 140).

63kg: 1. B. Prameela Velli (AP) (75 + 90 = 165), 2. Ashwani Kshirsagar (Mah) (67.5 + 75 = 142.5), 3. Laxmi Devi (Man) (55 + 77.5 = 132.5).

Over 63kg: 1. Premila Devi (UP) (60 + 72.5 = 132.5), 2. Chitra Chandramohan (Ker) (52.5 + 80 = 132.5), 3. Kanmel Geetha (Man) (57.5+ 72.5 = 130).
