Vinay Kumar, Khaleel prop up Hyderabad

By Our Sports Reporter

Vinay Kumar of Hyderabad sweeps Tamil Nadu left-arm spinner Ramkumar in their Ranji Trophy match at Hyderabad on Wednesday.

HYDERABAD DEC. 17. Middle-order batsman D. Vinay Kumar came up with a gritty knock (84 batting, 12x4, 1x5) to help Hyderabad, put in, post a comfortable 237 for four at close on the first day of the four-day Ranji Trophy Elite Group `B' duel against Tamil Nadu at the Gymkhana Grounds here on Wednesday.

Newcomer T. Suman, who replaced A. Nandakishore as opener, failed to come good as Tamilkumaran had him caught behind by Dinesh Kaarthick. But, southpaw Daniel Manohar (54, 9x4) and Vinay Kumar put on 68 runs for the second wicket, which effectively dashed whatever hopes the Tamil Nadu bowlers had of exploiting the wicket that had a tinge of grass.

Vinay Kumar, when on 24, was dropped by the wicketkeeper off Kumaran and that proved costly as the batsman grew in confidence and started playing good shots, particularly square of the wicket.

After N. Arjun Yadav (8) and A.T. Rayudu (7), who didn't seem to have recovered fully from the viral fever, failed to come good, the gutsy wicketkeeper-batsman Ibrahim Khaleel (44 batting, 4x4) gave good support to Vinay. The two have already put on 100 runs for the fifth wicket.

That Tamil Nadu tried seven bowlers in all on what turned out to be a frustrating day was a fair indication of the rock-solid approach of Vinay and the enterprising Ibrahim Khaleel.

The scoreboard: Hyderabad (1st innings): Daniel Manohar c Vidyut Sivaramakrishnan b Gokulakrishnan 54, T. Suman c Dinesh Kaarthick b Tamilkumaran 16, D. Vinay Kumar (batting) 84, N.
