Addressing a series of meetings in the Repalle Assembly constituency in Guntur district on Thursday, Dr Reddy said the Congress would fight for farmers' rights and mount pressure on the Government to mitigate their sufferings. Dr Reddy pooh-poohed the government for its "directionless approach". Had the Government acted on time in releasing the water into canals in the Krishna delta, crops worth crores of rupees would not have gone waste into the sea. He demanded that the Government directly enter the market to purchase wet and discoloured paddy instead of commencing negotiations with the Food Corporation of India. Dr Reddy visited Repalle, Peteru, Rudravaram, Penumudi, Peddapullivarru, Vellaturu and Kollur. He ferried his way in a boat from Puligadda in Krishna district to Penumudi in Guntur district across the Krishna. He was accorded a rousing reception by people and several Congress leaders. The DCC president Rayapati Srinivas, legislators in the dissolved Assembly, Kanna Laxminarayana, M.V. Ramana Rao, G. Venkat Reddy and Janga Krishna Moorthy, and a host of other former MLAs and former MPs, accompanied Dr Reddy on his tour.
