Joshi spoils Gujarat's chances

AHMEDABAD DEC. 19. Karnataka's left-arm spinner Sunil Joshi crushed Gujarat's aspirations of a semifinal birth with a five-wicket haul in the second innings on the penultimate day of their four-day Elite-B Ranji Trophy contest at the Sardar Patel Stadium, Motera, on Friday.

The host, which began its second essay after conceding a 143-run first innings lead, was only nine runs ahead at stumps with the top five packed off by Joshi.

At the Wankhede in Mumbai, the host moved to a position of command in its Elite-A contest, having restricted Railways to 198 for a first innings lead of 190 runs and ending the day at 82 for three at stumps in its second innings.

In Mumbai: Mumbai 388 & 82 for three in 42 overs (J.P. Yadav three for 13) v Railways 198 in 97.5 overs (S.B. Bangar 49, S.N. Khanolkar 41, S. Verma 44 not out, Ramesh Powar four for 69).

In Delhi: Kerala 371 (Ajay Kudua 123, Sunil Oasis 63 not out, Sarandeep Singh four for 83, Rahul Sanghvi four for 83) v Delhi 108 without loss (Gautam Gambhir 61 batting, Rajat Bhatia 39 batting).

In Vadodara: Uttar Pradesh 473 v Baroda 249 in 76.3 overs (S.S. Parab 31, N.R. Mongia 85, T.B. Arothe 34, S. Joshi 33, A.W. Zaidi four for 75, R. Mishra three for 77) & 69 for four in 21 overs.

Elite-B:
