By Our Staff Reporter

NIZAMABAD DEC. 19. The Nizamabad CSI church at Kanteswar here is celebrating its 100 years of existence from Saturday.

Bishop in Medak and deputy moderator, CSI, Rt. Rev. B.P. Sugandhar, will officially inaugurate the three-day celebrations on the church premises. A series of cultural programmes and sports competitions are being conducted to mark the centenary celebrations, according to the Presbyter-in-charge of CSI Church, Rev. T. Bhaskar. The celebrations will conclude on December 22.

Rev. Bhaskar said that an English Missionary, Rev. J.C.K. Anestey, and an Indian Evangelist, M. Venkat Ramaiah, launched the God's work in 1899 in Nizamabad, which was earlier known as Indur. The Wesleyan missionary undertook the task of evangelising the district. The church is constructed on a hill which is known as Wesleygutta. In 1902, a missionary bungalow was constructed. The then Collector of Nizamabad, Burzorji Jamshedji, allotted a piece of land for construction of the church.

In 1903 three-corner stones were laid by B. Cornelius, J.C. Hudson and C.T. Winters for construction of the church. Rev. F. Lamb formulated and sponsored the project at an outlay of Rs. 7,500. Contributions were raised from members and others. A donation of 40 pounds was made from England.

The church celebrated its silver jubilee in 1928 and the golden jubilee in 1953. The diamond jubilee celebrations were held in 1978. Rev. Bhaskar said in commemoration of the centenary celebrations, a committee was constituted. A medical camp is also being arranged on December 22. The convener of the celebrations committee, K.A. Vidyasagar, organising secretaries -- G. Sunil Peters and M.J. Prakasam -- and others addressed the media.
