PW movement on the wane, says DIG

By Our Staff Reporter

ADILABAD DEC. 19. The Warangal range Deputy Inspector-General of Police, T. Krishna Prasad, on Friday said the People's War movement was on the decline with the surrender of several top cadre.

Addressing a press conference here today, Mr. Krishna Prasad said the PW suffered serious reversals in the district in the last few months. The killings of two district committee secretaries and few other important cadres caused severe setback to the outfit.

He said the number of surrenders was on the rise and in all 95 surrenders had taken place in the district in the last one year. The strength of the PW had come down to 35 in Adilabad district while the police succeeded in killing 10 naxalites. Growing disenchantment among the cadre, ill health and non-cooperation from villagers was forcing naxalites to surrender, he observed.

He said more villages were turning against the extremists. Twenty-six villages had revolted against them while 352 others had passed resolutions banning their entry. He said the police had launched Sanjeevani programme to provide medicare for the parents of the underground cadre. The impact of medical camps was such that the Boath local guerrilla squad commander, Sekhar, resident of Warangal district, and Nagesh, Machareddy Kamareddy area commander, hailing from Yellareddipet village, surrendered before the police. Their parents had been provided treatment by the police.

Referring to the welfare measures for policemen, the DIG said housing societies had been registered in four districts. The land for construction of houses has been identified in Adilabad, Mancherial and Nirmal towns. The Superintendent of Police, Mahesh Muralidhar Bhagwat, and the town DSP, Hanmanth Rao, were present.
