Four held on charge of extortion

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD DEC. 19. For the first time after their formation, the Cyberabad police have invoked the Andhra Pradesh Control of Organised Crime Act (AP COCA) against five members of a `pseudo naxal gang' who were nabbed on Friday when they allegedly tried to extort money from a resident of Neredmet, K. Konda Reddy.

However, the kingpin, Ashok, and two of his associates -- Ramu and Raju -- managed to escape the police dragnet, a press release said.

The gang was charged with extorting Rs. 2 lakhs from Mr. Reddy on November 8 after allegedly intimidating him with a revolver and knives at his residence. Later, they sent a letter in the name of the CPI-ML People's War Telangana Zonal Committee on November 19, demanding an amount of Rs. 8 lakhs.

After receiving the letter, Mr. Reddy approached the Neredmet police, who registered a case and took up investigation. A police team, comprising SIs, Ramesh, Ravinder and Prasad, lay in wait for the gang at Mr. Reddy's house today. While Ashok, Ramu and Raju fled, B. Kumar, M. Madhusudhan, J. Mallaiah and Y. Dayakar were caught.

Investigation revealed that the gang earlier robbed a resident of Khusaiguda of his motorcycle and cell phone and attempted to extort money from businessmen. The Cyberabad Police Commissioner, M. Mahender Reddy, appreciated the work done by constables, Parashuram, Rajesh, Murali and Home Guard, Kishore. They would be rewarded suitably.

Six apprehended: The Kulsumpura police arrested six persons in the last two days in connection with communal attack reported at MCH Colony in Jiyaguda in the second week of December.

Birju Kumar (25) and Ganesh (24), both of Keshavaswamynagar, and Balakrishna (19), Saibaba (20) and Anil (19) of MCH Colony were arrested and remanded to judicial custody on Thursday. Another youngster, Thakur Baldev Singh (19), was picked up on Friday. He would be produced before the court on Saturday, the Goshamahal ACP, D. Ashok, said.
