Advani is only the second Indian after Om Agrawal to win the prestigious world title. The late Agrawal had triumphed in 1984. The Sportstar, a sister publication of The Hindu, began naming its annual Sportsperson of the Year in 1994. The first to win the award was Sachin Tendulkar. Since then others who have been honoured with this award include Viswanathan Anand, Leander Paes, Mohammed Azharuddin, Sourav Ganguly, Mahesh Bhupathi, Karnam Malleswari, Pullela Gopi Chand and Rahul Dravid. The magazine's Young Achiever award for 2003 goes to the young squash champion, Joshna Chinappa. The award carries a cash prize of Rs. 50,000. This plucky girl, not yet 18, won the Asian junior championship in Islamabad and the British Open Under-17 title apart from ensuring her pre-eminent position in the junior and senior sections at the national level. Advani will feature on the poster of The Sportstar's year-end special issue dated December 27. The special issue has comprehensive reviews of all major sports in 2003 and also celebrates the heroics of the Indian cricketers in the Adelaide Test.
