Inaugurating the National Institute of Unani Medicine (NIUM), she said the Government had recognised the appeal, popularity, and relevance of traditional systems of medicine, and was providing facilities and opportunities for them to grow and reach a larger number of people. Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Sidha, and Homoeopathy (AYUSH) were being accorded the status of health systems not only in India but also globally, she added. The Secretary, Department of AYUSH, Shekhar Dutt, spoke. The NIUM is a joint venture between the Union and State Governments. Though the State Government granted 55 acres of land at Srigandadakavalu village in Bangalore North taluk in 1959, the institute is being run temporarily at the offices of the Directorate of Indian Systems of Medicine and Homoeopathy. The State has provided Rs. 5 crores for the Rs. 27-crores project.
