Mega 'laddoo' in the making for PM's birthday bash

By Our Special Correspondent

LUCKNOW DEC. 20. Admirers of the Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Bajpayee, have decided to create a "record'' by preparing a massive "laddoo'' to celebrate his birthday in Lucknow on December 25.

The `laddoo' which is expected to find a mention in the Limca Book of Records would weigh 3,000 kg and would be packed in a three cubic metre box costing Rs. 14,000.

According to a local BJP leader, Nripendra Pandey, who conceived the idea, the "sweet pack'' would be taken to Raj Bhavan in a trolley and from there to the Hanuman temple in the fashionable Hazratganj market to be distributed among the people. The preparation of the `laddoo' would require the services of 26 expert "halwais'' ( sweetmakers).

The local BJP leaders wanted the Prime Minister himself to remain present in his Lok Sabha constituency during the celebrations but that has not been possible. Mr. Vajpayee would, however, visit Lucknow on December 24 in connection with some official programmes when he would get a feel of the festivities the next day.

An exhibition of paintings named "Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 52 moods'' would be put up at the railway stadium from where the Prime Minister would flag off five new trains from Lucknow at a function on December 24. The next day the exhibition would be shifted to Lal Baradari for the benefit of the common people.

A community feast, a yagna and a blood donation camp are some other programmes planned by the leader of the BJP legislature group, Lalji Tandon, in connection with the birthday celebrations.

His absence from Lucknow on his birthday would be compensated by a meeting of BJP workers with the Prime Minister at the residence of Mr. Tandon in the evening of December 24.

He will also address a meeting of American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin at the King George's Medical University earlier in the day.
