Tribal people meet on December 28

By Our Staff Correspondent

MYSORE DEC. 20. A State-level convention of tribal people, organised by the Dalit Sangharsha Samiti (DSS) and the State Tribal Organisations Coordination Committee will be held here on December 28.

Disclosing this to presspersons here today, the DSS leader, Hariharananda Swamy, said the convention had been organised to discuss important issues pertaining to tribal people.

He said that while the Centre and State Government had been talking of development of tribal people and the NGOs were working in tribal areas, the lot of the tribal people had not improved much.

Though the NGOs were claiming to be working for the uplift of tribal people, these organisations had kept them out of the mainstream, he charged.

Mr. Swamy alleged that political groups were using the tribal people for their own ends and that the promises of more number of castes being included in the list of Scheduled Tribes were hollow. Even if more castes were to be added to the list, the original tribes were losing prominence as well as benefits, he said. In the light this, Mr. Swamy said there was a need for the tribal people to fight for their rights.

The convention would discuss the problems faced by the tribal people and representatives from across the State would participate in the meet, he said.

The convention, he said, would seek the benefits that have been extended to tribal people in Madhya Pradesh, and that the State Government should ensure that the rights of the tribal people were not trampled upon. Providing education and admissions to hostels and educational institutions for tribal children should be ensured.

He said the convention would deliberate on 14 major demands that would be placed before the Government.

These included appointment of tribal people as LAMPS secretaries, permission to lift minor forest produce, prevention of misuse of three per cent reservation meant for tribal people, and reservation in nomination to legislature and Parliament.

Mr. Swamy said the Social Welfare Minister, A. Krishnappa, will inaugurate the convention.
