`Women can make a difference in politics'

By Our Staff Reporter

THANJAVUR DEC. 20. The President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, threw enough hints that politics would be a much better sphere of activity if more women took to it.

"If women got the 33 per cent quota in Parliament they are demanding now, then, I believe, they would be in a position to reform parliamentary procedures,'' Mr. Kalam said addressing students of the Periyar Maniammai College of Technology for Women here today.

In another significant observation that allowed an insight into his reading of present-day politics, Mr. Kalam exhorted girl students in particular to take to politics after completing their studies, as, that, hopefully, would help bring down corrupt practices that plagued the field. "Don't laugh the next time when you hear any girl express her desire to become a politician'' he said. Any "small aim is a crime. You should imbue an indomitable spirit to chase great ambitions,'' he told the gathering.
