Punjabi pop singer Daler Mehndi with the special staff of Delhi police at the Tis Hazari court in New Delhi on Saturday.
Rejecting a bail plea moved by the accused, the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, Reena Singh Nag, allowed the remand of the pop star who had been evading arrest since September 19. "In view of the gravity of the offence and the condition of the accused, the bail application is dismissed. Arrest is allowed and he is also given in police custody for being produced before a court in Patiala by tomorrow," the court said. Earlier, Daler was produced before the court amidst tight security. Even after lawyers and journalists were asked to move out of the courtroom, the proceedings were held in the judge's chamber. After coming to know of the arrest by the Delhi Police, the Punjab Police today moved an application before the court seeking arrest and transit remand for taking the pop star to Patiala. The singer was arrested hours after the Supreme Court declined on Friday to grant any protection from arrest till the pendency of his anticipatory bail plea before the court. The court had directed him to surrender before the Patiala trial court on January 8. Daler, against whom a non-bailable warrant had been issued by a Patiala court, was arrested by the Delhi Police from a house in Vasant Vihar here. UNI
