Andhra Pradesh-Hyderabad
By Our Staff Reporter
The focus of the party, ahead of the elections, on Telangana became obvious with two of the four regional conventions being planned in the region, close on the heels of the Karimnagar meeting on Thursday. The conventions will be held at Visakhapatnam, Warangal, Anantapur and Nizamabad during the first half of January. The party has also decided to seek donations from the public and its cadre to meet the election commitments. The decisions, taken at the Politburo meeting chaired by the party president, N. Chandrababu Naidu, were later announced at a workshop for senior leaders here on Saturday. Mr. Naidu gave a call to the leaders to collect even Rs. 10 or Rs. 5 from the public but the entire amount should be strictly accounted. Donors should be given receipts and there must be utmost transparency in the process. He, however, did not indicate when the drive would begin but asked the leaders to discuss the matter with workers. Recalling that the last membership drive of the party had fetched Rs. 8.5 crores from 80 lakh persons who were enrolled as ordinary and active members, Mr. Naidu said by going to the public a lot more money could be raised to face the elections and with it their mandate to take the State ahead on the path of development. He said ten subjects had been identified to present daily progress reports on the achievements of the State Government in a two-hour slot in the evening over Teja TV channel from Monday. The subjects are human resource development (covering education, health and sports), rural development, infrastructure projects, agriculture and allied sectors, irrigation, law and order, revenue receipts, women empowerment and governance. He had no doubt that the TDP would win all 294 Assembly seats if the issues were projected well. "People have confidence in us. Our commitment must go up." Mr. Naidu said the strike by junior doctors was politically motivated. He criticised the Congress for supporting the strike. There were more number of medical colleges in the Congress-ruled Maharashtra and Karnataka but the party was opposed to the increase in their number in the State. The Chief Minister came down heavily on the Congress and the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) for "misleading people'' and supporting naxalites directly or indirectly. The TDP had to effectively counter the Opposition criticism by creating awareness among people. He denied that the incumbency factor would influence the elections. The TDP had already proved the pro-establishment wave on the plank of development at the recent party conventions. He stressed on team work and shedding of differences in the party ahead of polls. The TDP spokesman, C. Ramachandraiah, who briefed reporters about the outcome of the Politburo meeting, said the committee to draft the election manifesto of the party would be constituted on Sunday. He said the donations to party would also be accepted in cheques. The meeting decided to organise the "janda' programme of the TDP to visit villages from January 18 to 25. Focus on Telangana
