Congress reiterates commitment to Telangana cause

By Our Special Correspondent

MAHABUBNAGAR DEC. 20. The fourth leg of the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee's `Prajahitha Yatra' in south Telangana districts began on Saturday with a promise to complete all pending projects in the region within three years on coming to power in the forthcoming Assembly elections.

A large gathering greeted the bus yatra carrying senior Congress leaders led by the Congress Working Committee member, Ghulam Nabi Azad, all along the route. Reiterating the party's commitment to the Telangana cause, they said that the continuous neglect of the region, particularly Mahabubnagar district, under the TDP rule was startling.

The Congress was committed to fulfilment of its promises unlike the TDP and people could trust the party with power in the next elections safely, they said. The leaders' preference of themes changed from the regular ones to more relevant issues such as mass migration and farmers' suicide in Telangana districts.

They promised a proper employment package for all sections and subsidies to artisans and farmers. Drawing the attention of people to the assurance of the Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, to develop his adopted district of Mahabubnagar, they said that the living conditions had only worsened instead.

The grandiose programmes and plans of the Chief Minister like Formula One and Afro-Asian Games only benefited a miniscule section while a large population was languishing in poverty, they said. Even the hard earned savings of the DWCRA groups were being frittered away by the Government on unproductive schemes and the Chief Minister's publicity, they alleged.

The frustration of the masses was swelling into a strong anti-incumbency factor and the Congress party was prepared to fulfil the aspirations of people, so far neglected by the TDP rule. The party was in the process of evolving specific wage earning packages and employment opportunities for farmers, artisans, women and the youth, they said.

The Congress Government would keep its promises and not ``cheat people'' like the TDP, they added.

Apart from Mr. Ghulam Nabi Azad, the APCC leaders — Y.S. Rajashekar Reddy, D. Srinivas and V. Hanumantha Rao — the party spokesman, Jaipal Reddy, Shabbir Ali, Mallu Ravi and, Chinna Reddy were among others who spoke. The yatra was welcomed in various villages en route by people beating drums while groups of youngsters and women danced.
