Apex court declines to stay bail

By J. Venkatesan

New Delhi Dec.20. Observing that a case for ex-parte suspension of the Madras High Court order granting bail to R.R. Gopal, editor, Nakkheeran, and cancellation of the bail has not been made out by the Tamil Nadu Government, the Supreme Court today declined to stay the order.

A Bench of Justice R.C. Lahoti and Justice Brijesh Kumar said Mr. Gopal, who was arrested on April 11 under Section 12 (1) (B) (a) of the Arms Act and Section 124 A of the Indian Penal Code and later charged under Section 4 (a) of the Prevention of Terrorism Act, was directed to be released on bail yesterday by the High Court. It was stated the accused was already released on bail. "A case for ex-parte suspension of the impugned order and cancellation of bail is not made out."
