Andhra Pradesh-Hyderabad
By Our Special Correspondent
The rally was flagged off at Kolkatta along with three similar rallies from Jammu, Kanyakumari and Delhi on December 6. The four rallies, after passing through 20 states, would converge at the World Social Forum, beginning at Mumbai on January 16. At the forum, the rallyists would present the views expressed by Dalits on their rights and concerns in the light of globalisation, liberalisation and privatisation. Addressing a press conference, N. Paul Divakar, national convener of the NCDHR, said the emphasis of Dalit rights movement had so far been on their self-respect. Now an effort was being made to widen the scope to other equally important issues like land, economic upliftment, employment, education and women. The rally would tour Andhra Pradesh from December 21 to January 7, reaching Hyderabad on January 3. A number of street and public meetings are being conducted en route. Mr. Divakar said the response to the rallies, each having 50 activists travelling in a bus, had been tremendous and it got instant support from local mass organisations and the Dalit communities.
