NDA Government flayed for `saffronisation' of education

By Our Staff Reporter

NELLORE DEC. 20. The All-India president of National Students Union of India (NSUI), Ashok Tanwar, charged the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) -led Central Government of what he described as `saffronisation and communalisation' of the educational system in the country.

Addressing the district training camp of the NSUI at Chintareddipalem, 6 km. from here on Saturday, he alleged that in its attempts to change the system of education, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been helped by the Rashtriya Swyamsevak Sangh(RSS), to adopt the Hindutva ideology. The NSUI chief dwelt at length on the contributions made by the Congress party to various sectors and informed that at the time of independence while the literacy rate of the country was just 18.5 per cent, it shot up to 55 per cent when the Congress Government stepped down from office. Also the number of Universities rose from 20 to 300, whereas the number of students reached a peak of 90 lakhs from a mere one lakh at the time of independence. Mr. Tanwar gave a call to the present day youth to displace the Governments at the Centre and in Andhra Pradesh and promised that in case the Congress came to power, free food facility would be provided to students belonging to poor and economically backward classes.

He ridiculed the claim of the NDA Government that it would provide one crore jobs per year.

The AICC secretary, R.P.N. Singh, pointed that despite people like Bill Clinton, Bill Gates and others visiting Andhra Pradesh, the Government has not been able to attract much investment in State.
