Measures to check untoward incidents

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM Dec. 20. A set of measures, which includes heightened police vigil, has been mooted to avoid untoward incidents in connection with the celebration of Christmas and New Year in the city.

The precautionary steps were finalised at a meeting of the District Peace and National Integration Committee chaired by the District Collector, K. R. Muraleedharan, here today.

The Assistant Commissioner of Police, G. Murukesan, who attended the meeting, told The Hindu that it has been decided to step up vigil during the festive season and launch a crackdown on vending of illicit liquor and drunken driving.

These measures, more or less along the lines of those that are usually undertaken during the Onam season, includes stepping up policing at venues such as fairs to check chain-snatching and eve-teasing.

It has also been decided to deploy more police forces at potential trouble spots on New Year eve. Meanwhile, the committee has appealed to the public to avoid blowing up isolated incidents that could spark off tension between communities. The Police Department has been asked to step up night patrol activities. It was noted that effective liaisoning between the police and residents' associations had paid dividends in preventing crime in several residential areas in the city.

The additional district magistrate, S. Lalithambika, B. D. Master (Congress J), Shamsuddeen (Janata Dal S), the Federation of Residents' Association of Thiruvananthapuram office-bearers, T.A. John and C. Rajagopalan Nair, P. Unnikrishnan, representative of the Speaker of the Assembly, volunteers of the Sathya Sai Seva Samiti and various other organisations were among those who participated in the meeting.

The samiti, which reviewed the existing law and order situation in the city, was of the view that the state of affairs was satisfactory at present. There was reference to the recent spate of crimes in the Medical College, Ulloor, Peroorkada and Cheruvaickal areas. The spurt in criminal activities in these areas had been brought under control, according to Mr. Murukesan.
