Ordered to pay compensation

Srinagar Dec 21. Holding doctors of a government-run hospital guilty of criminal negligence, the Jammu and Kashmir Human Rights Commission (HRC) today directed the authorities to pay compensation to a patient for removal of stone in her kidney.

The commission passed its order on a complaint filed by Manzoor Ahmad Wani, a resident of the border district of Kupwara, whose wife Reshma was diagnosed with a stone in her kidney by doctors at the SMHS hospital.

However, when she was operated upon on January 24 this year, the doctors did not remove the stone saying it could be removed with ``lithotripsy (ESWL)'' but the facility was not available at the hospital. Disposing the case, the HRC came down heavily on the doctors for criminal negligence and directed the state to pay the expenses of the patient for lithotripsy and make arrangements to conduct it at any prestigious centre in the country. The judgement observed that the attitude of the doctors in the case was criminal in nature.

Meanwhile, junior doctors in the government-run hospitals deferred their strike for four weeks following assurance by the Health Minister, Lal Singh. The doctors who had undertaken the indefinite strike from December 11 had intensified it after the government refused to enhance their salaries and threatened to take stern action against the doctors. They were demanding salaries on par with their counterparts at the Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS). -- UNI
