Release more water from Mettur: CPI

By Our Staff Reporter

Thanjavur Dec. 21. CPI members today staged rail and road rokos at various places in Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts demanding release of more water from the Mettur dam (now the discharge is 5,000 cusecs) to save the standing samba crop in tail-end areas. The police arrested 3,000 persons in the two districts.

At Mannargudi, volunteers led by Sivapunniyam, MLA, staged a road roko. At Thiruthuraipoondi, party members led by G. Palanisamy, MLA, staged road and rail rokos.

Train number 867 from Thiruthuraipoondi was stopped for more than three hours.

Road rokos were held at Nagapattinam, Valivalam, Keelaiyur, Keevalur, Thirumarugal, Vaimedu and Thalanayar.

R. Nallakannu, CPI State secretary, told presspersons at Thanjavur that the discharge of 5,000 cusecs would not reach even Mukkombu, near Tiruchi. Farmers in delta districts need water till February to save the samba crop. So the quantum must be increased.
