Madhu Kumar's feat stands out

By Our Special Correspondent

Madhu Kumar (Haryana) who set a new meet record in hammer throw.

KOLLAM DEC. 22. On a day when Kerala assured itself of an eighth overall title by taking an unassailable lead, it was the record-breaking-effort of Madhu Kumar (Haryana) in the boys' under-20 hammer throw which stood out among the seven new meet marks that were witnessed in the 19th National junior athletic meet at the Lal Bahadur stadium here on Monday.

With just a day remaining in the four-day meet, the Kerala team, improved its lead in the points table to a whopping 150 points, finishing the day at 337 points as against the 187 of Haryana which is second. Tamil Nadu is in third place with 185 points.

Three Keralites — S.R. Bindu and twins Niksy Joseph and Liksy Joseph — were also among the seven who set new meet records today, but in terms of performance none were able to match Madhu Kumar effort. Madhu Kumar bettered the existing meet record of Uttar Pradesh's Asish Kumar Singh (60.93m) by close to six metres.

The Haryana lad threw the 6kg iron ball and chain to a distance of 66.39m and held centrestage, though he started off quite badly. He had fouled his first attempt before achieving a distance of 61.53. He fouled again on his third trial and as the eight qualifiers for the final three throws were identified, Madhu Kumar was placed second behind eventual silver-medallist H. Mishra of Andhra Pradesh, who had a best of 63.23m.
