Letters to the Editor
Sir, This refers to K.K. Katyal's article `A step forward?' (Dec. 22). Though the India-Pakistan dispute on Kashmir is not expected to melt away suddenly and cobwebs remain to be cleared before meaningful negotiations can start, the Pakistan President, Pervez Musharraf's desire to go beyond the `stated position' and meet India `half-way' has to be reciprocated in earnestness. Despite the cynicism underpinned by the umpteen failures of the past, there is hope as it is the first time Pakistan has come this far. Syed Sultan Mohiddin, Cuddapah, A.P. * * * Sir, The author has rightly said that despite the recent peace moves by both the countries, it will be difficult to hammer out an acceptable solution. The very fact that Gen. Musharraf's bold statement evoked loud protests from other Pakistani leaders shows it will be tough to move forward. There will be similar constraints on the Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, especially given next year's general elections. R. Muralikumar, Chennai
