Thulasidas' bid to make Air India strong

By Our Staff Correspondent

MUMBAI DEC. 22. V. Thulasidas has assumed charge as Chairman and Managing Director of Air-India today.

Addressing his maiden press conference, Mr. Thulasidas, who will be based in Mumbai, said Air-India had to suitably adjust to the environment of competition. "The objective is to make Air-India a strong, modern airline, one of the top in Asia and in the world. This has to be achieved by the whole team in Air-India and therefore I have been meeting with the Departmental heads of Air-India and tried to understand the corporate issues of Air-India and how it needs to be reformulated in the present context".

In terms of capacity addition, Air-India today added a leased 747 to its existing fleet of 34 aircraft. "We need to add more capacity and more aircraft with increasing demand," said Mr. Thulasidas.

"On the one hand there is growth in terms of the economy and growth as a whole, growth in passenger traffic to and from India.

On the other hand there is competition. Air-India needs to adjust to these conditions and formulate a policy to be strong and to be known as a top airline," he added.
