Cong. MLA resigns

Raipur Dec 22. Congress leader Ramadhar Kashyap, a close confidant of former Chief Minister Ajit Jogi, has resigned from Akaltara Assembly seat in Chhattisgarh, reducing the total strength of Congress to 36 in the 90-member house.

``Kashyap's resignation has been accepted by the Pro-tem Speaker Rajendra Prasad Shukla and with that the effective strength of the House has been reduced to 89 with one seat lying vacant,'' the Assembly secretariat sources told PTI here today.

Kashyap, a Rajya Sabha MP, had defeated the sitting BJP MLA from Akaltara in Janjgir-Champa district, Chhatram Dewangan, in December 1 poll, but has decided to retain his membership in the Upper House, the sources said.

Kashyap was handpicked by Jogi for the Upper House last year from the state and was also given ticket by the former Chief Minister to fight as a Congress candidate.

Jogi was suspended from Congress on December 6 for his alleged involvement in bribing some BJP leaders to prevent the Dr. Raman Singh government from coming to power in the state.

Assembly sources said since Jogi was a Congress member, he has been allotted seat in the front row with his party members.

The BJP has 50 members, BSP has two and the NCP has a lone member besides 36 MLAs of the Congress in the 90-member House with one seat lying vacant. -- PTI
