J&K to seek enforcement of Ravi water agreement

Jammu Dec 22. The Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed has said that he will `forcefully' take up with the Centre and the Punjab government the issue of providing to the state the full share of Ravi water.

Addressing a public meeting at Sallan in Billawar constituency of Kathua district last evening, the Chief Minister said Jammu and Kashmir was not getting 1150 cusecs of water as agreed to by the Punjab government while initiating the Shahpur Kandi barrage.

Stating that depriving the state of its share of water from Ravi river was injustice, he said he would take up the matter at the highest level, both at the Central and Punjab government.

Regretting that despite his meeting with the Punjab Chief Minister and his senior officers at Chandigarh on the issue, no headway had been made in the matter.

The Chief Minister said his government would also seek early approval of the ambitious Rs 80 crore Kandi water supply project. He said Kandi area between Jatwal and Lakhanpur was facing acute problem of water supply both for drinking and irrigation purposes.

The Chief Minister also announced schemes for improving roads, setting up a dispensary and schools.

Deputy Chief Minister Mangat Ram Sharma said the government would set up a delimitation commission and a Finance commission in the state as promised in the common minimum programme. He said new administrative units would also be created after reviewing the recommendations of the Wazir Commission.

He said the Farooq government had signed a MoU with the central government undertaking not to create jobs in view of precarious financial condition of the state.

He said the present government was bound by this agreement. -- UNI
