Tirath set to become Dy. Speaker

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI DEC. 22. The former Congress Minister and three-time MLA from Baljit Nagar, Krishna Tirath, is all set to be elected unopposed as Deputy Speaker of the Delhi Assembly. The election will take place tomorrow. The Bharatiya Janata Party has decided not to put up a candidate for the post and is sticking to its demand that the ruling party leave this post to the Opposition, as has been the precedent in Parliament.

The Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit, today filed five sets of nomination papers on behalf of Ms. Tirath in the Chamber of the Secretary of the Vidhan Sabha, Siddharath Rao. She was accompanied by the Health Minister, Yoganand Shastri, Industries Minister, Mangat Ram Singhal, Education Minister, Arvinder Singh Lovely, Finance Minister, A.K. Walia and Chief Whip, Ramakant Goswami. Senior party MLA S.C. Vats was also present.

The Speaker, Ajay Maken, has set 2 p.m. as the time for election of the Deputy Speaker inside the House. The motion proposing the name of Ms. Tirath in the House would be moved and the election would be through after the members give their approval. The Opposition BJP had criticised the Chief Minister for ignoring the claim of the Opposition for the post of the Deputy Speaker. They had demanded that Ms. Dikshit and her party should follow the precedent set in the Lok Sabha where the Deputy Speaker is from the Opposition. However, the ruling Congress did not even react to the BJP's demand and went ahead with the candidature of Ms. Tirath for the post.
