IYC leaders injured in lathicharge

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI DEC. 22. The Indian Youth Congress president, Randeep Singh Surjewala, and secretary, Babli Singh, along with over half-a-dozen party activists were reportedly injured in a police lathicharge in the Capital today when they were going to hold a rally in protest against the recent oil price increase.

The IYC leaders alleged that the police abused and kicked both Mr. Surjewala and Ms. Singh who were leading the demonstrators near Jantar Mantar on Parliament Street. They alleged that Ms. Singh was abused and kicked by policemen despite presence of female police personnel at the spot. The IYC leaders also claimed that at least half-a-dozen party activists were admitted to hospital after they sustained injuries in the lathicharge. A large number of IYC workers were also detained by the police, they added. IYC leaders, who also registered a complaint with the police, have demanded immediate suspension of the police personnel involved in the lathicharge.

Addressing the party activists, the All-India Congress Committee treasurer, Moti Lal Vohra, said it was high time that people dislodge anti-people BJP-led NDA Government at the Centre. In the forthcoming general elections, the Congress would expose the failures of the Union Government and how it had betrayed people's trust.

According to Mr. Surjewala, in its rule, the Vajpayee Government had given nothing except hunger, unemployment and corruption. He also threatened to launch a nationwide to protest steep hike in fuel prices. "Rampant unemployment has become the bane of Indian economy with the nation being the home to the largest number of unemployed people in the world. Similarly, it had failed to give any respite to poor and homeless people across the country," he alleged.
