Gear up for polls, Sonia tells partymen

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI DEC. 23. The Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, today emphasised the need for the party to work "collectively and cohesively" to meet the challenges ahead, including possible early Lok Sabha elections, instead of sulking over the debacle in the recent Assembly polls.

"I am aware that a great deal of disappointment exists among us after the recent setback. But it does not help to carry on in this mood. We have to step out of it. We have to be totally prepared and ready ourselves for the coming challenge," she said at the end of the general body meeting of the Congress Parliamentary Party here.

Ms. Gandhi told the MPs that steps had been taken to formulate strategies and form election management teams for the coming elections to the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly and a possible early Lok Sabha election.

Ms. Gandhi said the Bharatiya Janata Party had embarked on a "systematic campaign" to denigrate the achievements of the previous Congress Governments.

`FIR delayed deliberately'

Referring to the registering of a case by the CBI against the former Union Minister, Dilip Singh Judev, she alleged that the FIR was deliberately delayed with the intention of sparing the BJP more embarrassment during the election.
