U.S. renews terrorist status of Jaish, Lashkar

NEW DELHI DEC. 24. The United States has re-designated the Lashkar-e-Taiba and the Jaish-e-Muhammad as "foreign terrorist organisations" with effect from Tuesday, a U.S. State Department statement, issued in Washington, but released here, said today. The initial designations of these groups as "foreign terrorist organisations" in 2001 is due to expire on December 26.

"In addition, in consultation with the Attorney-General [John Ashcroft], the Secretary of the Treasury [John Snow], and the Secretary of Homeland Security [Tom Ridge], the Secretary [of State, Colin Powell] has amended the designations of Jaish-e-Muhammad and Lashkar-e-Taiba under Executive Order 13224 to add new aliases currently in use by these terrorist organisations," the statement said.

By reconfirming the terrorist status of these organisations, the U.S. Government said it preserved the Administration's ability to take action against them in accordance with the provisions of the Immigration and Nationality Act.

"This Act makes it illegal for persons in the United States or subject to U.S. jurisdiction to provide material support to these terrorist groups," it said. The law also required U.S. financial institutions to block assets held by them; and it enabled Washington to deny visas to representatives of these organisations.
