dated December 26, 1953: Queen's Christmas Message from Auckland

In her Christmas broadcast on the 25th from Department House in Auckland, New Zealand, Queen Elizabeth II described the British Commonwealth as the most effective and progressive association of peoples which history had ever seen.

She elaborated, "The Commonwealth is moving steadily towards greater harmony between its many creeds, colours and races. To this new conception of an equal partnership of nations and races, I dedicate myself heart and soul every day. I do hope that my children are listening to my message." The children — Prince Charles and Princess Anne — were celebrating Christmas at Sandringham, the Queen's country home in Norfolk, England — 12,000 miles away. It was the first time ever that a British Monarch had delivered the traditional Christmas message from outside Britain.

Of course, we all want our children at Christmas time, for that is the season above all others when each family gathers at its own hearth. I hope that mine are listening to me now, and I am sure that when the time comes they too will be great travellers. Some people have expressed the hope that my reign may mark a new Elizabethan era. Frankly I do not myself feel at all like my great Tudor forbear, who was blessed with neither husband nor children, and who ruled as a despot never able to leave her native shores... ''
