Meet to discuss backwardness of Muslims

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI DEC. 25. Three prominent Muslim organisations have come together to organise a national convention here on Saturday to discuss the economic, social and political backwardness in the Muslim community and their proper representations in these fields.

The convention will focus on issues such as representation for Muslims in statutory bodies such as the National Backward Classes Commission, inclusion of Muslims in the list of Scheduled Castes and implementation of the Gopal Singh Commission, which reviewed the financial and minority backwardness in the country.

The convention is being organised by the Minorities Action Group of India, the All India Muslim OBC Organisation and the Ameen-E-Shariat Education Trust.

The chairman of the Minorities Action Group of India, Qari Mohammed Mian Mazhari, and the president of the All India Muslim OBC Organisation, Shabbir Ahmed Ansari, said it was unfortunate that there was not even a single member belonging to the Muslim community on the National Backward Classes Commission, though Muslims formed a sizeable section of OBCs and a panel was a statutory body.

Likewise, even while the Constitution was amended to accommodate in the Scheduled Castes list those who had converted to Buddhism, injustice continued for Muslims and Christians and the recommendations of the Gopal Singh Commission, which was set up as early as 1974, were yet to be implemented.
