Functions galore on PM's birthday

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI DEC. 25. Various programmes were held across the Capital today to celebrate the Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee's 79th birthday which was observed as "Vijay Vikas Parva''.

A vintage car rally was held in the morning from Red Fort to India Gate to mark the occasion. It was flagged off by India's former cricket captain, M.A.K. Pataudi. Organised by the Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, Vijay Goel, it was a chance to see the best of vintage cars on the roads.

An "on-the-spot painting competition'' for school children was organised at National Stadium near India Gate by Aadharshila Vidyapeeth, Pitampura. An exhibition based on the achievements of the Vajpayee Government was also put up at the venue. The competition was organised in three different categories and there were different topics for different groups. While the children expressed their creativity by painting on the topics of road safety, Indian dances, commitment to eliminate tourism, development, prosperity, metro rail and monuments of Delhi, they also painted birthday greeting cards for Mr. Vajpayee.

A Rashtriya Kavi Sammelan was organised at Parliament House Library in the evening.

The Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party unit president, Harsh Vardhan, presented a shawl and a memento of Qutab Minar to Mr. Vajpayee at his residence, where too many school children apart from the party workers and office-bearers gathered in the afternoon to felicitate Mr. Vajpayee. The Lok Sabha Speaker, Manohar Joshi, also greeted the Prime Minister on his birthday.

While the party workers and supporters came from across the country, there was Gabruddin from Kabirpur village in Sonepat who donated his blood for the 165th time thus creating a record of sorts.

He said he had been donating blood regularly for the past 38 years on the birthdays of various Prime Ministers since the late Lal Bahadur Shastri appealed to citizens to donate blood for the national cause.
