Letters to the Editor
Sir, The passage of the Bill concerning the pay and other perquisites of MPs ( Dec. 23 ) is nothing novel, though the unanimity among the members and the speed of the proceedings were unique. This time, however, there is a value-added feature in that, while Sushma Swaraj only wanted permission to introduce the Bill, the members thought it more fit to pass the same right away. Congratulations and best of wishes to our leaders. P.R.V. Raja, Pandalam, Kerala * * * Sir, While the directly elected members of the Lower House passed the Bill in seven minutes as the issue was too trivial to justify any serious analysis, the members of the Upper House devoted at least 40 minutes. And how selfless of Laloo Prasad Yadav, whose "heart bled at the pathetic condition" of ex-MPs and ex-Ministers to argue for a minimum pension of Rs.10,000 a month for them! P.R.R. Nayar, Thiruvananthapuram Sir, When those who are working hard to improve the economy ask for an increase in salary and perks, the governments say they do not have enough funds. But when it comes to increasing their benefits, the people's representatives pass the bill in 10 minutes. Ramesh Kannan, Madurai, T.N.
