Letters to the Editor
Sir, I refer to the news on Satyanarayan Jatiya's explanation on why there can be no quota for Dalit converts ( Dec. 19 ). Reservation has been given to the economically backward and the culturally underprivileged. A Dalit who gets converted to Islam or Christianity does not get rich or advance culturally overnight. Why should the downtrodden be punished just because they choose a particular faith? T. Charles John Bhaskar, Chennai * * * Sir, It is preposterous to debunk reservation and declare that the doors have virtually been closed to merit in the public sector. Are all jobs in the public sector reserved? The SCs, the STs and the OBCs have been kept out of the mainstream for millennia under the varna system. When thousands of years of reservation of education and jobs in favour of a few castes did not hurt merit, reservation for a few hundreds will certainly not do so. Amruthapani Inaganti, Nellore, A.P.
