Unseeded Ramkrishna in lead

Ahmedabad Dec. 25. Continuing his winning ways against seeded players, 119th ranked P. Ramkrishna of Andhra Pradesh shot into lead defeating West Bengal's eighth seed Soumya Thakurta (4) in the fifth round of the 17th under-13 National chess championship here on Thursday.

Soumya, with white pieces, opted for a Scotch opening. In the middle game, Soumya made a horrible blunder which allowed Ramkrishna gain the upper-hand. Ramkrishna, in acute time pressure, offered a draw which was refused. But after completion of the required 40 moves, he forced Soumya to accept defeat.

On the second board Wednesday's joint leader and giant killer Maharashtra's Subodh Lakhe (4) was defeated by Tamil Nadu's Ashwin Jayram (4.5). Also in joint second were S. Saikrishna (AP), S. Ramesh (TN) and Suman Basu (West Bengal).

In the girls' category, third seed Andra Pradesh's K. Lakshmi Pranitha (4.5) was held by fifth seed Tamil Nadu's P.K. Jayashree (4). Pranitha now shares the lead with Anjana N. Sowjanyaa (TN) and Sai Ghate (Maharashtra).

Saikrishna (AP) (4), Souvik Chakraborty (WB) (4) drew with C.R.G. Krishna (AP) (4), R. Premnath (TN) (3.5) lost to S. Ramesh (TN) (4.5), Suman Basu (WB) (4.5) bt K. Narayanan (TN) (3.5).

Girls: P.K. Jayashree (TN) (4) drew with K. Lakshmi Pranitha (AP) (4.5), V.K. Sindhu (TN) (3.5) lost to Anjana N. Sowjanyaa (TN) (4.5), H. Sowmya (TN) (4) drew with Vaishnavi K. (TN) (4), Pragna Patavi (AP) (3) lost to Sai Ghate (Mah) (4.5), Ramya Krishna (COL) (4) bt Roshni S. (KCA) (3), Purva Bavaskar (Mah) (4) bt D.S. Maanasa Priya (TN) (3), Dhyani Dave (Guj) (4) bt S.
