Parties allege lapses in voter enrolment

By Our Staff Reporter

Cuddapah Dec. 25. Leaders of political parties alleged that the number of voters exceeded the population in several villages of Cuddapah district at a meeting addressed by the Election Commission officials at Sabha Bhavan last night.

Leaders of Congress, CPI, CPI (M), TDP and BJP alleged irregularities in the ongoing electoral revision and the Opposition parties accused the ruling party of getting bogus voters enrolled. On the other hand, the Telugu Desam leaders charged the Opposition parties with levelling baseless allegations to portray the TDP in bad light.

The Election Commission Secretary, Tapas Kumar, and the Under Secretary, S. Rudela, gave a patient hearing to all parties and gave replies.

The former DCC president, Shaik Hussain, forwarded a representation to the EC officials alleging that number of voters enrolled exceeded the population in about 70 villages in the district and objections were rejected. He alleged that the Minister for Housing, P. Ramasubba Reddy, got bogus voters enrolled in several villages. The Government transferred revenue and police officials to ensure posting of those favourable to them, he alleged.

The former Minister, D.L. Ravindra Reddy, alleged that 92.5 per cent of the population were enrolled as voters in a polling station in Duvvur mandal and 90 per cent in some villages in Brahmamgari Matham mandal.

The district TDP president, K. Sivananda Reddy, alleged that bogus voters were enrolled in Kamanur in Proddatur mandal, Settipalle in Rayachoti mandal and in some villages in Jammalamadugu and Mydukur segments where the Congress has hold.

The former Rajampet MLA, K. Prabhavathamma, sought voting right to the persons who migrated a few years ago and settled down at Rajampet.

The district CPI secretary, G. Obulesu, also alleged that voters exceeded the population in some villages and wanted elimination of bogus voters.

The CPI(M) leader, N. Ravisankar Reddy, wanted extension of electoral revision process till January 31. The EC officials assured them of examining their complaints and take the necessary action.

The Collector, Jayesh Ranjan, said the district has a population of 26.62 lakhs and the number of voters was 17.54 lakhs. Nearly 2.07 lakh applications seeking voting right were received, besides 17,000 objections.
