Reprocessing of fuel begins
By Our Special Correspondent
CHENNAI
DEC. 27.
Reprocessing of fuel from the irradiated Fast Breeder Test Reactor (FBTR) has begun in a pilot plant at the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), Kalpakkam.
The IGCAR director, S.B. Bhoje, said the fuel with a burn-up of about 25,000 MW d/t (mega watt day/tonne) has been taken up for reprocessing for the first time in the world. Mr. Bhoje added that this was an important milestone in the fast breeder reactor programme in the country.
The Atomic Energy Regulatory Board licenses the plant, Lead Mini Cell (LMC), for operation after a series of commissioning trials with natural carbide and un-irradiated mixed plutonium-uranium carbide fuel. In the fast breeder fuel cycle, plutonium and uranium from the spent fuel have to be recovered, purified and re-fabricated for recycling into the reactor.
This is to ensure that the natural uranium reserves can be fully used to enhance power production.
