IA reports lower net loss

NEW DELHI DEC. 27. Indian Airlines suffered a net loss of Rs. 196.56 crores in 2002-03 as against Rs. 246.75 crores in the 2001-02 fiscal, the company's annual general meeting was told.

The domestic carrier registered an increase of 5.41 per cent in the operating expenses and it could achieve eight per cent increase in the operating revenue. Foreign exchange earning of IA amounted to Rs. 1409.74 crores and it contributed Rs. 232.94 crores to the exchequer by way of payment of custom duty, sales tax and excise duty. On the physical side, there had been 8.97 per cent increase in the Available Tonne Kilometers (ATKMs) and 11.58 per cent increase in Revenue Tonne Kilometer (RTKMs) as compared to 2001-02. Load factor of the airline also saw an upward movement with 2.70 per cent increase and the carrier could achieve 2.33 per cent increase in the figure of passengers carried.

Shareholders were told that remarkable feature during the last fiscal has been the despatch reliability of Airbus A-320 fleet which was maintained at 99.2 per cent outclassing top airlines like Lufthansa, Air France, United Airlines and Air Canada. In terms of utilisation of A-320 aircraft, Airbus Industrie adjudged IA the best airline. The company also added Gaya-Bangkok on its international circuit.
