Mamata assails LF slapping new taxes

Kolkata Dec. 27. The Union Minister and Trinamool Congress chief, Mamata Banerjee today came down heavily on West Bengal's Left Front Government for its decision in slapping new taxes on people, saying it will trigger spiralling prices.

``A certain amount of tax is alright, but how much tax will people pay? The State is taxing the people for consuming potable water, for using cycles and even for keeping pets like cattle and poultry,'' she said, while inaugurating the restoration of the Parnasree Lake under the Kolkata Municipal Corporation's Environment Development Project sponsored by the Asian Development Bank. Observing that the Left Front Government appeared to be planning taxes even for births, deaths and even for walking, she said ``Taxing the people at random will trigger a price spiral. With no avenue to augment their income, what will the common people do?''

Pointing out that the mayor of the TC-BJP-controlled KMC, Subrata Mukherjee had rolled back, at her request, the board's decision on water tax, she said, ``we have shown, where there is a will, there is a way. The Trinamool Congress will not do anything against the people.'' — PTI
