`There was no compulsion'

By Our Staff Correspondent

MYSORE Dec. 27. The Chief Minister, S.M. Krishna, said here today that the Cabinet's decision to hand over the investigation of the stamp paper scam to the Central Bureau of Investigation was not taken under any sort of compulsion.

He told presspersons that the Government had its own reasons for doing so. "We will explain them before the Supreme Court,'' he said. When told that the Government had refused to hand over the investigation of the death of the former Minister, H. Nagappa, in Veerappan's custody to the Central agency, Mr. Krishna said the two cases were not similar. Asked about downsizing of his Ministry in the wake of a Bill enacted in Parliament, he said: "The Bill has just been passed. It is yet to go before the President for his assent. We will look into it later.'' Asked if the Congress would strike alliances with like-minded parties in the State as recommended by the Pranab Mukherjee Committee, Mr. Krishna said a decision in the matter would have to be taken by the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi.
