Hyderabad keeps semifinal hopes alive

New Delhi Dec. 27. Hyderabad grabbed five points and kept its semifinal hopes alive by crushing Rajasthan by an innings and nine runs on the third day of the Ranji Trophy Elite Group `B' match at the Gymkhana grounds in Hyderabad on Saturday.

Rajasthan which began the third day at 122 for two, chasing Hyderabad's 389, was rocked by N.P. Singh's incisive bowling. The paceman grabbed six for 70 as the visitor, for whom opener Vineet Saxena top-scored with 62, was dismissed for 235.

Following on, Rajasthan fared even worse, being bundled out for 145, with host pacemen Vishnuvardhan picking up four for 51. Support seamer Daniel Manohar claimed three wickets.

Hyderabad, which needed to beat Rajasthan with a bonus point to stay in contention, has finished its league engagements with 15 points from six matches, the same as Tamil Nadu. If Karnataka scores a win without a bonus point over Assam in Bangalore, all three teams will finish with 15 points each in Elite B. If Karnataka gains a bonus point, it will top the group, with the run quotient deciding the second team to qualify. Rajasthan which ended with four points from six games, has been relegated.

Double hundred for Barrington

Meanwhile, host Karnataka, thanks to a double hundred from opener Barrington Rowland (210, 434b, 26x4) and a hundred from all-rounder Sunil Joshi (110, 166b, 13x4, 2x6), reached 475, a lead of 266 over Assam, which was 52 for one at stumps.

Arindam carries his bat

In Ahmedabad, Bengal opener Arindam Das remained unconquered on 215 (488b, 23x4, 1x6) and carried his bat in the process as Bengal, gained a 300-run lead over Gujarat. The host was 74 for one at stumps in this Elite `B' contest.

After another truncated day's play in the Elite `A' clash at Mohali, Punjab was struggling at 70 for five, with Mumbai paceman S. Hazare picking up three wickets. Earlier, Mumbai was bowled out for 224 with seamer Gagandeep Singh scalping five for 68. Robin Morris shone for Mumbai with 81.

The Kerala-Uttar Pradesh Elite `A' clash at Palakkad was interestingly poised with the visitor setting the host a victory target of 223. Kerala was 32 for one at stumps.

In a dramatic day's cricket in Vadodra's Elite `A' duel, Railways, leading by 136 runs in the first innings, was reduced to 84 for eight in its second essay. Earlier, paceman Harvinder Singh claimed five for 40 as Baroda was dismissed for 217.

Middle-order batsman Y. Venugopala Rao's 142 (369b, 17x4) was the highlight in Andhra's 417 for seven against Delhi in the Elite `A' game in Visakhapatnam.
