Delay in action to cost party dear: Chandy

By Our Staff Reporter

THRISSUR DEC. 27. The UDF convener, Oommen Chandy, today said that the delay on the part of the Congress high command in resolving the crisis in the State unit would cost the party dear.

Addressing a press conference here, Mr. Chandy pointed out that the high command had earlier said that a decision in this regard would be taken after the Assembly elections in north Indian States.

He said the party workers were disillusioned over the delay in taking actions required for the smooth functioning of the party.

Replying to questions, he said the situation in the State unit of the Congress had worsened to the extent that it was difficult to move ahead.

The happenings in the Kerala unit of the Congress were something that no party would tolerate, he said.

Asked whether his faction had submitted any concrete proposal to resolve the stalemate, Mr. Chandy said, "we have placed the entire facts before the party high command and it is now for the high command to take a decision. The proposals submitted before the high command cannot be made public."

The UDF convener said that as per reports received by him, the three-member committee appointed by the high command to study the developments in Kerala had not yet submitted its report to the party president, Sonia Gandhi.

Regarding reports that the UDF constituents had spoken against the Chief Minister, A.K. Antony, before the party high command, Mr. Chandy said, "we have full faith in the UDF constituents.''

He said the demand for a leadership change would become relevant only when Mr. Antony loses majority in the Congress Legislature Party (CLP). K. Karunakaran was replaced from the post of Chief Minister earlier when he had lost the majority in the CLP, he said.

According to Mr. Chandy, the recent developments in the State had exposed the political hypocrisy of the CPI(M). Its claim of being a party that stood for ideals had been proved false.

Now it stood exposed as a party that would go to any extent to come to power.
