Massive revamp soon in Delhi BJP

NEW DELHI DEC. 27. Stating that he was contemplating a complete change in the party set-up, the Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party president, Harsh Vardhan, today announced that he would undertake a massive revamp of the entire local unit and declare his new team in the first week of January. The new team would be in place before the national executive of the party meets in Hyderabad on January 11 and 12, he added.

Dr. Harsh Vardhan said that with the resignation of the previous president, Madan Lal Khurana, the entire team of office-bearers automatically stands dissolved. In fact, he informed that he had a long meeting in this regard with the party president, Venkaiah Naidu, this morning and discussed the formation of the new team. His team, the BJP chief said, would represent the future and comprise of experience and youth. A decision on holding organisational polls and their timing would be taken by the national executive of the party, but the new Delhi BJP team would be put in place before that, he added.

He declared the BJP would play the role of a responsive Opposition in the Delhi Assembly and the MCD. However, he said the party would ensure that problems of water, parking facilities, power, congestion, employment, education, transport and good governance are properly highlighted and the decision makers in the Delhi Government are kept under check.

Dr. Harsh Vardhan said that due to poor financial mismanagement, the Delhi Government was today faced with a financial crisis in view of the falling revenue collections. This poor financial health of the State Government does not augur well for the people of Delhi and they should get ready for a dose of next taxation. He said it had been revealed that the Sheila Dikshit Government was preparing to increase drinking water charges, impose additional tax on CNG, diesel, increase bus fares to bridge the increasing revenue gap. He urged the citizens of Delhi to tighten their belts for a fight against the Congress Government's misadventure in this regard.

On the issue of the controversial Conditional Access System (CAS) that had caused a lot of heartburn in South Delhi, the BJP chief said that he had raised the matter with the Union Information and Broadcasting Minister, Ravi Shankar Prasad. He had urged Mr. Prasad to ensure that consumers are not victimised and CAS is made customer friendly. Mr. Harsh Vardhan said his first priority would be to prepare the organisation for taking up impending challenges in view of the Lok Sabha polls. He exhorted all sections of the society to come forward and participate in the effort of nation building under the leadership of the Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee. In fact, the style of Dr. Harsh Vardhan's functioning will be departure from the aggressive and media savvy approach of Mr. Khurana. It is understood that the present BJP chief also has the full backing of the Sangh Parivar and the RSS could play a crucial role in the re-structuring of the organisation in Delhi.
