Move to license foreign trawlers opposed

By Our Staff Reporter

Thiruvananthapuram Dec. 27 . The Kerala Swathantra Matsyathozhilali Federation and the National Fishworkers' Forum have urged the Central Government to withdraw the decision to license the operation of 30 foreign trawlers in Indian waters. The State president of the federation, T. Peter, and the chairman of the Fishworkers' Forum, Harekrishnadeb Nath, told reporters here today that the decision, if implemented, would threaten the livelihood of traditional fishermen and affect the export of marine products from India.

The two organisations have decided to launch a joint agitation to press the Government to withdraw its decision. On January 19, the organisations would rally fish workers from all over the country to picket trains in Mumbai. Mr. Peter said the stir would be extended to all parts of the country if the Government continued to turn a blind eye to the issue.
