Kerala-Thiruvananthapuram
By Our Staff Reporter
The first dose will be provided on January 4 followed by a second dose on February 22. The oral polio vaccines will be administered across 2,474 booths to be set up in the district. A contingent of around 5,000 specially trained health workers are expected to participate in the massive exercise to eradicate the wild polio virus. The District Medical Officer, E.K. Madhavan, has directed the team of volunteers to be present at the booths from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on January 4. He has issued instructions to the health workers not to leave the booths before the scheduled closing time. By convention, booths are also installed at mass transit points such as bus terminals, railway stations and airports to ensure maximum coverage. Mobile booths are also pressed into service to immunise children of families living in settlements that are not easily accessible. The DMO said wild polio viruses were widely prevalent in parts of southern States. He appealed to all parents to subject children under five years of age to immunisation against polio during the Pulse Polio campaign.
