A literary faux pas

Kolkata Dec. 28. Call it a faux pas or an inertia of getting carried away by the magic of Bengali literature.

The Union Minister of Small Scale Industry, C.P. Thakur, yesterday attributed the credit of penning the National Anthem, ``Jana Gana Mana ...'', to Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay!

Delivering the inaugural address at the 76th All-India Bengali Literature Conference, Mr. Thakur said, ``Bengalis can boast of the best of the writers the country has ever produced... There's Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay and Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, the author of Jana Gana Mana...'', sending the packed audience suddenly whispering and clarifying among themselves.

However, the much-awaited correction on behalf of the Minister did not come.
