Kerala
By Our Special Correspondent
Offering his comments on the ongoing discussion over the Kerala University Vice-Chancellor, B. Ekbal's observation at the Kerala Social Forum that globalisation alone could not be blamed for the ills of public institutions, Mr. Ravindranath said it was nobody's case that all public institutions were 100 per cent perfect. However, one should also note that there was a deliberate attempt to destabilise such institutions, he said. The CITU leader pointed out that two major aspects of globalisation were the deflationary policies being pushed by the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank and the withdrawal of the State from social sectors. The latest UNCTAD report had exposed the hollowness of this policy and shown how it was hurting national economies with low employment generation and low off take of products and services. As a result, several nations had begun to adopt inflationary policies that implied higher Government spending that could spur demand, he said.
