`Government trying to erode Deve Gowda's support base'

By Our Special Correspondent

Bangalore Dec. 27. Two JD(S) leaders — H.D. Kumaraswamy, former MP, and K.N. Chakrapani — have alleged that the State Government is trying to erode the support base of the former Prime Minister and JD(S) President, H..D. Deve Gowda, in Hassan and Bangalore Rural districts.

Speaking to presspersons today, Mr. Kumaraswamy, who is one of the sons of Mr. Deve Gowda, cited several cases of arbitrary cancellation of elections to panchayat raj bodies allegedly to prevent the JD(S) from coming to power.

The former MP and Mr. Chakrapani, who is the Working President of the State unit of the Yuva JD(S), said that the Government had gone to the extent of clamping prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Cr.P.C. allegedly to prevent supporters of Mr. Deve Gowda from performing puja at a Ganesha temple in Hosur village in Ramanagara taluk of Bangalore Rural taluk scheduled for today. They had intended to perform a "Panchamrita Abhisheka" at the village temple. But the district administration prohibited the assembly of people in the village on the ground that there was tension.

They blamed the Congress MLA from Ramanagara, C.M. Lingappa, for the action of the authorities. Mr. Kumaraswamy warned that the JD(S) would be forced to disrupt the functions attended by the Chief Minister, S.M. Krishna, in his Maddur Assembly constituency. Mr. Krishna, who called himself the "No. One" Chief Minister in the country, should not stoop to low levels.

He alleged that to prevent a JD(S) woman candidate from becoming the president of a gram panchayat in the Ramanagaram constituency, the election was put off indefinitely. The election should have been held today, and the State Election Commission had ordered its conduct.
