Letters to the Editor
Sir, From Sonia Gandhi's statement on poll alliances it appears that at last the Congress seems to have made up its mind. As with any other evolving democracy, India's polity is getting polarised into two main alliances. The grand old party of India can form a National Republican Alliance (NRA) to usher in the era of a two-party system.
Rajesh Madhavan,
Sir, That Ms. Gandhi is keen to forge an electoral alliance of like-minded secular parties is becoming clearer by the day. There are not many takers for such an alliance straightaway given the years of mistrust between the Congress and others. There has to be meaningful give-and-take if any alternative to the NDA is to be forged.
D.B.N. Murthy,
Sir, The Congress president has said her party will not impose its leadership on others. This statement is a departure from the party's earlier stand that she will be projected as the prime ministerial candidate. But as pointed out in the article "An unrealistic approach" (Dec. 29), this is an unrealistic and unhelpful approach. The BJP is entirely banking on the "Atal" factor as it has paid rich electoral dividends in the recent Assembly polls. Unless the Congress combine projects its prime ministerial candidate, it will be an unequal fight with the BJP.
V.N. Gopal,
